by H Kennedy
by E Segal
by C Sweeney

PDX Natural Dye and Pigment is group of regional artists who create colors out of natural materials like rocks, rust, kitchen scraps, fungi, and plants. Utilizing a range of techniques for transferring this color, they then create sculpture, books, paintings, drawings, apparel, quilts and more. “Our processes are informed by traditional recipes and cross-cultural wisdom as well as modern methods.”

Becoming Feral - a solo show by Pearlyn Tan

Contra Spem Spero (Against All Hope, I Hope) - a solo show by Irina Belova

In Becoming Feral, Pearlyn Tan explores the “shifting internal landscape of midlife,” which she experiences “not as a loss of control, but a return to instinct.” Using solar printing techniques, her work maps the intersections of body, identity, and nature. Pearlyn has exhibited widely across the Pacific Northwest. Her work has won numerous awards and is in several public collections.

Irina Belova is a self-taught fiber artist who uses felting techniques to create sculptural work out of wool, silk, hemp, flax, and bamboo. “They are deeply personal, shaped by my connection to Ukraine and by the collective struggle of my people. Yet they also speak to a universal truth that even in devastation, endurance emerges, quiet but unbroken.”  20% of the artist’s profit from exhibition sales will be donated to Aid Ukraine Now.

Youth Arts Biennial Exhibition

A reception will be held on Saturday, July 18 from 1-3 p.m. Youth attendees will be invited to participate in an art-making activity during the event and to add their creations to the Biennial exhibition.

The Youth Arts Biennial exhibition at the Multnomah Arts Center (MAC) brings together work in a wide range of media by over 200 youth artists. The exhibiting artists range in age from 3-18 and are all previous participants in youth Visual Art, Literary Art, Music, Theatre and Community Engagement programs at MAC.

The Multnomah Arts Center has been serving the Portland area for over five decades, with over one 100 talented and dedicated teachers providing arts instruction to 6,000 or more students each year. Visual arts students learn to trust and express their unique visions through a wide range of art materials and techniques. Children as young as 18 months old can be a part of family classes, and classes offerings in ceramics, textiles, drawing, printmaking and more continue all the way through the teen years. Theatre classes allow students to build their skills as they explore theatrical styles and forms through workshops and performances. Literary arts classes offer students the option to take one-day workshops or ten-week classes to explore their written voice. Private music lessons and group/ensemble classes are available, as well as family music classes for ages 2-4. The Community Engagement program brings MAC’s arts education resources directly to Portland’s underfunded and underserved communities. This vital work is made possible through Multnomah Arts Center Association (MACA) funding and the collaboration with trusted partner organizations like The Rosewood Initiative, Somali American Council of Oregon, and Portland Parks & Recreation’s Free Lunch & Play program.
