Creative Excursions In and Around Portland
Ages 16 & Up!

This summer, take your pen and notebook out for a stroll, and enliven your writing with a breath of fresh air! With local writers and artists as your guides, explore public transit, the food cart phenomenon, the farmer's market scene, Portland's original rose garden, a cross-cultural landscape, or the view from Sauvie Island. Each one-day excursion is a self-contained writing experience; register for one, or two or for all six! The excursions are open to all; both beginning and experienced writers are welcome.

100 Years of Roses – Peninsula Park

Peninsula Park was Portlands original Rose Garden. A century later, many of the parks original features remain. Explore the history of this often overlooked park, and consider how the park currently functions. What happens to a citys landmarks? How does a city re-envision its history? Read, walk, write, discuss, and leave time to smell the roses. Bring a sack lunch.

My Day on the MAX

Spend a summer day traveling Portland by way of the citys rail lines. As a class, we will explore the far reaches of North, South, East, and West, while we write and draw our experiences, conveniently under the roof of our urban transit system and rail stops. Well make plans to meet at a later date to collectively create a chapbook from selections of work produced during the workshop. MAX fare not included in price.

Found Words at the Farmer's Market

Translate the color, music, taste, sounds, and characters of the midsummer festival on Portlands park blocks into writing. Wander individually through the crowd, recording details that make this market, this day, and these three blocks hum with a vibrancy all its own. We will meet again to fold these findings into a piece of writing and share our results after. Bring a notebook, a timepiece, and a towel or seat for the grass.

The Taste of Place – Writing About Food

Portlands exploding food cart scene has revolutionized eating. Come see what all the fuss is about! Well dine together at the outdoor tables, and explore the art of writing through our taste buds and discussion of food-related creative writing samples. Whether you write poems, stories, or memoir, or are just craving a griddled mortadella and provolone sandwich, youll enjoy this culinary writing adventure. Borrowed Scenery – The Japanese Garden

In this ideal setting for contemplation and observation, Well consider some of the basic principles behind the gardens design, and their potential relationships to writing. Well wander the garden paths and write. Exercises will help jump-start the writing process. Well meet again to share our results, with time for feedback and ideas. Inspired Field Journaling – A Sauvie Island Adventure

Engage deeply with the world around you. Guided by prompts that inspire interaction with the open fields, oak forest, and sunny shores of Oak Islands Sturgeon Bay, well spend the afternoon writing and drawing. At afternoons end, well gather on a small beach with views of Mount Saint Helens, Mount Ranier, and Mount Hood to share our stories and sketches. Parking permit not included in workshop fee.

Portland Parks & Recreation’s Multnomah Arts Center (MAC) is benefitting from a generous donation to its jewelry and metalworking classes.  Tom Temple, an artist from Bend, gave specialized equipment and tools worth $20,000 to the MAC’s metal arts program.

The retired teacher dropped by the Multnomah Arts Center last summer.

“I was looking for a school where my tools and equipment would enhance their metalworking program,” says Temple.  “MAC had an environment that was welcoming, encouraging, and where students feel safe to take risks and explore their unique designs.  Excellent instruction was demonstrated by the quality and fine craftsmanship in the many types of student work on display.”

Thanks to Temple and his wife, Phillis, MAC’s metal arts program now has five dedicated soldering stations and four dedicated kilns.  The Multnomah Arts Center also now has a greatly enhanced collection of tools, books, and supplies as part of the Temples’ generosity.  Students learn various techniques, such as casting metal objects from wax forms, enameling metals, creating metal jewelry, and fusing glass in a variety of artistic ways.  All instruction is provided by professional teaching artists.

“This donation has made a significant impact on our ability to teach the art of metalsmithing,” says Michael Walsh, Executive Director of the Multnomah Arts Center.  “We can now serve more students at the same time, which helps keep class fees more affordable.  We can also teach to a higher level of expertise because of a more complete studio.”

The good news for MAC didn’t stop with the Temples’ generosity.  Tom and Phillis’ gift spurred additional giving to MAC’s metal arts program.  The center’s all-volunteer non-profit partner, the Multnomah Arts Center Association, donated $10,000 to improve classroom space.  The investments were quickly followed by another $3,000 in-kind donation from Fred Meyer Jewelers.

MAC finished a major remodeling effort this winter to allow students access to all of the new equipment.

“Our instructors have reported that student feedback about these changes has been overwhelmingly positive, and there is new enthusiasm about MAC’s metal studio in the greater Portland community,” adds Walsh.

The Multnomah Arts Center offers more than a dozen different classes in metal arts every term for both youth and adults.
