Weaving baskets, sometimes making art, always teaching others….
Husband and wife team Roger Besselievre and Carol Ross have been basketmakers for over thirty years, until January 2011 on a 40 acre farm in the state of West Virginia, a state of truly outstanding basketmakers, both contemporary and traditional. We started our business , Bonnett Run Basketry, in 1988 and were active teaching and exhibiting throughout the Mid-Atlantic Region. Moving to Portland in 2011 was an adventure. Almost the first thing we did was register our new business, Woven Rainbows, and get to work weaving color. We dye our own reed – more than 100 colors – and design our own baskets, with Japanese basketry a new and fascinating specialty. We are finding wonderful opportunities to teach others and are currently on staff at the Multnomah Art Center, Portland Community College, the Elsie Stuhr Senior Center in Beaverton and the Leach Botanical Gardens. We are especially appreciating all of the chances we have to work with children, sharing the wonderful craft of basket making.
