Join MAC Trayle Studio for an exciting morning with John Saling, master Northwest engraver. John will be demonstrating the technique of engraving – an intaglio method that involves pushing a burin through the surface of a copper plate, removing the copper, to generate crisp, graphic lines that can be from a half of a hair’s width to thicker than a pencil line. Come for this interactive demonstration on engraving that will include how these kinds of prints are made and printed. John will also be showing a portfolio of his prints.
A Portland native, John has been a print maker here since the 1970s, including a member of Inkling Studio. Art-based travel in 2013 to Sweden, Germany, The Netherlands and France has refreshed and challenged his perceptions. John has shared his knowledge of printmaking and enthusiasm for hand pulled prints through teaching, collaborative projects and involvement in the local printmaking community. For those who are interested in making their own engravings, look for John’s workshop in Trayle this coming Spring Term (dates TBA).
Artists in the Studio Series is a new MAC program in which prominent artists in the world of printmaking and book arts share their work and expertise.
Free and open to the public, but space is limited and RSVP is highly recommended.
Send RSVPs to Nicole Rawlins.
