WHAT: Performance of George Friedrich Handel’s Semele
WHERE: Multnomah Arts Center 7688 SW Capitol Highway
WHEN: Saturday, May 4, 7:00pm and Sunday, May 5, 2:00pm
Portland Parks & Recreation’s Multnomah Arts Center (MAC) will be hosting the Baroque Opera Workshop’s performance of Handel’s Semele, written in 1743 based on the classical myth of Semele, Mother of Dionysus. The event is open to all, with a suggested donation of $20. Proceeds benefit the young performers and the Multnomah Arts Center Association (MACA).
This is the third season for the Baroque Opera Workshop at MAC. Each year these performances provide a rare chance for young new talent to perform a major work in its entirety. This pre-professional performing group has been coached under the direction of David Kerr, Sue Jensen, and David Rivinus.
“The orchestra is made up of players from Portland Youth Philharmonic, Metropolitan Youth Symphony and Portland Baroque Orchestra plus nine young professional singers,” says Kerr. “The goal of the orchestra is to give young people the experience of working in Baroque style within an opera setting.”
